For god’s sake, “SERENITY NOW!”Īnd finally, “Serenity Now” in our knowing better. Or when we feel so stressed that we justify not taking our run, yoga class, mindful walk or meditative break, and just keep chugging away, mindlessly. Or when we get home and we’re so exhausted that all we can do is eat dinner and crash, missing quality time with friends, family and self. We want to yell it when someone changes a meeting on us and screws up our schedule! “Serenity Now!” I just want to yell “Serenity NOW!” and have all my mindfulness practices automatically comeback to me, and find peace and equanimity at the snap of my fingers. I laugh, because right now, that is EXACTLY how I feel some mornings. And the scene(s) where Frank Costanza, in his heavy-tempered manner, starts yelling “Serenity Now, Serenity Now…!” in an attempt to regain control of his emotions, mind and blood pressure. So what sparked the hilarity of my random outburst of laughter? It was when I read an article that used the word “serenity.” Something in my brain fired back to that famous Seinfeld episode. We’ve fallen back into reactive living, letting life circumstances dictate the quality of our being and the quality of our day. When we begin, again and again, to drift below the line and find ourselves not being the present, authentic, and fully conscious person or leader we seek to be. When our energy gets drained from us, knowing the right ways to manage it. When our mindful intentions are usurped by over-packed schedules. For me, and for many nowadays, we are acutely aware when we are out of alignment with the self. So I did some self-exploration to find out why.įirst was awareness. Strangely, the feeling is more acute, more poignant than in past years, months or weeks than I can remember. It’s a feeling of being overwhelmed by the pace of activity and the amount to do. Especially after coming back from our long restful vacations. The one where we feel like we’ve hit a brick wall. The point is, nearly every meeting or conversation I have had in the past 2 weeks has started off with a sigh, or body language, or a pure monologue of exasperation. You may be asking… “OK Aaron, WTF kind of blog post is this?” Fair enough. If you haven’t seen it, I’ve embedded the clip. Costanza’s therapist tells him that, to control his blood pressure, he should yell “Serenity Now!” when he’s stressed. It harkens back to an episode of Seinfeld. And it was so poignant to what many of us are going through at this time of year. How modern day life’s insanity catches us – and how funny it can beĭo you ever have those moments when you remember something and out comes a random burst of laughter? One that’s so situationally funny that it makes your eyes water, and people look at you like you’re crazy.
